I’m 25 years old and I’ve lived in North London pretty much my whole life, apart from 4 years studying Civil/Structural Engineering and a couple of 4 month stints here and there. I currently work for a structural engineering company and spend 9-5 Monday-Friday doing the calculations on the designs of bridges.
I’ve started this site to try and document some of my activities beyond The Big Smoke that is London. I have a real passion for the outdoors, adventure and action sports; three things which typically aren’t too easy to do whilst living in London. For a while people have said to me “I wish I could go on adventures like you”, and I’ve always said “You can! What’s stopping you?”. It seems a lot of people don’t realise how much is possible whilst living in London and working a normal office job – the main aim of this site is to document what I get up to; for my own benefit, and hopefully to inspire and encourage others to get outside and enjoy life Beyond The Smoke. If I’ve got any information on the site wrong, or there’s some stuff you really think should be added then drop me an email. I’m also always looking to try new activities and sports in and around London, so if you’ve got anything you’d recommend or you’d like your activity to be featured then get in touch.
Some Things I Care About
Bridges To Prosperity is a charity that I’ve done some work for and am very passionate about. Bridges to Prosperity (B2P) envision a world where poverty caused by rural isolation no longer exists. The charity works to build footbridges to enable populations to have safe year-round access to healthcare, education and economic opportunities.
I travelled to Rwanda in 2015 to build a 51m suspension footbridge, you can see more about the project on the project’s website; www.gasekeb2p.co.uk .
I also have a passion for photography, some of my snaps are on my (slightly out of date) website johanneswhittam.com.
My Instagram and Twitter handle is beyondthesmoke_ (don’t forget the underscore at the end!)
